Our next tribute brings back memories!

It was the summer of 2013 when the very first Great Moments in Vinyl ensemble stepped onstage to perform our very first tribute.  I was a radio DJ who had always been fascinated by the stories behind the songs I loved.  And when I realized that the classes I was taking at Old Town School of Folk Music were taught by incredibly talented musicians, I had the idea to enlist them to help launch a series of tribute concerts.  The plan was to feature specific artists and specific albums by celebrating the music with our live performances and by telling the tales of how that music came to be.

In the beginning, we would pick a pair of albums for each concert.  So in August 2013, we made our debut by featuring two favorites from Bruce Springsteen:  The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle and Born to Run.  It was exhilarating to be playing with a band of talented musicians.  And the horn section we brought in just added to the excitement of it all.  Plus, working with these experienced players, I picked up on some subtleties that I’d never thought of before.  You know, you just can’t do justice to “Born to Run” without someone there to play the glockenspiel part!

That was 11 summers ago.  Since then Great Moments in Vinyl has played a half dozen more Springsteen shows…as well as another 120 concerts paying tribute to a wide range of artists:  everyone from ABBA, The Beach Boys, and Elvis Costello to Led Zeppelin and ZZ Top.

Now that Great Moments in Vinyl is in its 12th year, we’re thrilled to be making another debut.  On January 11th of next year, we’ll be breaking ground at a brand new venue for us:  The Lyric Theater in Blue Island.  We’ll fill the night with plenty of songs from Springsteen’s classic period plus throw in a few surprises.  And of course, there’ll be plenty of stories to tie it all together.

We’re thrilled to still be making music for you after all this time.  Come celebrate the music of Bruce Springsteen once again with us!
