Prince started his career as a talented young singer and instrumentalist with an ear for funk and a penchant for provocative lyrics. But as he found his footing in the world of music, he began breaking down barriers and challenging preconceptions about race, religion, gender, sexuality, and more. And he did so while remaining both creatively adventurous and commercially accessible. His 1984 soundtrack to the film Purple Rain was the culminating moment of that vision, propelling Prince into superstar status and cementing the trajectory of the rest of his career.
